Best Of Times, Worst Of Times…
KICKBALL UPDATE!!!!!!!! It was the best of times…it was the worst of times. When it comes to the Vibralux Denim Mario Chalmersiz, you never know what the hell is going to happen.
IT WAS THE WORST OF TIMES
Week 7: Chalmersiz (6-0) vs Slowride Roadhouse (5-1)
So heading in to week 7, the Chalmersiz had posted a 6-0 record & appeared to be headed for a division title in the John Brown Division of the Kaw Valley Kickball League. They had looked impressive all season, & were looking forward to keeping their #3 ranking heading into pool play: then this happened. Sometimes, it seems that everything that can go wrong will, & thats what happened in week 7 for the Chalmersiz. It all started with the weather, with temperatures reaching into the 100′s, & the Chalmersiz misfortune of having to play the 530pm game. Then came the grass field. The Chalmersiz have been known as a dirt team over the past few years, & some of their worst games have come on grass. Then came the player shortage: with ringer Justin Cox gone due to his wife having a baby(nice timing you ass! actually…we love our new Amelia!!), ringer Matt Lechtenberg’s availability limited due to a hammy injury(he could barely limp & kicked left footed), Disc Golf CEO & fastest player on the team Justin “Subaru” Atwater-Taylor in Europe launching his new company overseas, and Sydney Headricks visiting her folks, the Chalmersiz were definitely shorthanded to say the least. And this time it caught up with them. After giving up a 2 run home run in the first inning, the Chalmersiz settled into their patented strong defense, only allowing 3 more runs the rest of the way. The only problem is, they couldn’t score to save their lives. In what Coach Candie called “the poorest offensive output i have ever been a part of in a kickball game…& i’ve been in the league 9 years”, the Chalmersiz scored a paltry 2 runs. Nothing seemed to work. Nothing. Also, the team faced some minor injuries with Jarred Rybicki tweaking his knee on a great catch in the outfield & Coach Candie hurting his hip running the bases, the Chalmersiz left dejected & limping. Facing the Slowride Roadhouse, the Chalmersiz fell 5-2 and saw the division title go by the wayside. Soon the drinks would begin flowing heavily, and hours later all would be forgotten….until next week.
IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES
Week 8: Chalmersiz (6-1) vs Replay Rowdies (5-2)
Coming off one of the most disappointing losses in Coach Candie’s history, he decided to make some changes to both the offensive & defensive line ups. I’m not saying that it worked, but the Chalmersiz played one of their best games in years!! With the return of all their players except for Subaru(still in Europe launching his Disc Golf disc golf bag company), the Chalmersiz returned to form, and then some. With everybody batting in the first inning, the Chalmersiz sprinted out to a 5-0 lead after one inning. With a quick 3 in the 2nd, and before anybody could realize what happened, the score was 8-0 Chalmersiz. And there would be no looking back. Game standouts included new leadoff kicker Brian “Bronco” Costello, who reached base & scored almost every time up to bat. Also, the return of both of the teams ringers was a sight for sore eyes, as Justin Cox kicked multiple doubles and a couple sac flies and Matt Lechtenberg kicked a ground rule double and a glorious grand slam to center field that cleared the 204 ft fence quite easily!! (this may be the longest homerun in the history of the Chalmersiz…in fact it almost certainly IZ!!!!!!!) On the defensive side, Coach Candie saw his hip recover from injury & defensively shut down the other team’s attempt to bunt in impressive fashion. Once again Barrett Hamilton continued his quiet but successful kicking style, & impressed his teammates when he got thrown out at home with his hands in pre-celebration mode…what a dick! But the most fun was had when Daniel Cox attempted a left footed kick and almost got a home run out of it. Although he was thrown out at the plate despite an impressive dive, and even though the Chalmersiz were up by a lot at that point, it got a huge response from the crowd & Coach Candie got goosebumps. All in all, Coach Candie was happy to get his team back. What a difference a week makes: Chalmersiz 18 Replay Rowdies 3
Coming Soon to a kickball field near you:
Week 9 Chalmersiz (7-1) vs Das Boot (7-1)
This game should be awesome!! Not only does it pit 2 top 5 teams against each other(Das Boot #4, Chalmersiz #5), but this game will also be played at historic Hobbs field and is the Kaw Valley Kickball Game of the Week. The game will be in front of a crowd of some 300+ drunk people…this should be a treat peeps!!
